Tumble Dryer Drum Not Turning or Seized: How to Fix It
A tumble dryer that hums, clicks, or trips a breaker but leaves the drum sitting perfectly still is one of the most common faults reported to appliance technicians. The good news is that a seized or stuck drum is rarely a sign the machine is finished — it's usually one of a handful of parts wearing out. Here's how to work through the problem safely and know when to call in a professional.
1. Start With a Safety Check
Before touching anything inside the dryer, unplug it from the wall. Tumble dryers combine a heating element, a motor, and moving belts in a tight space, and opening the cabinet on a live unit is not worth the risk. If your model uses gas for heating, make sure the gas supply is also isolated.
2. Listen to What the Dryer Is Telling You
- Drum silent, motor silent: Likely an electrical fault, a blown thermal fuse, or a door switch not engaging.
- Motor running, drum not moving: This points to a broken or slipped drive belt, or a seized idler pulley.
- Loud humming with no movement: Often a jammed drum, worn drum bearings, or a motor capacitor failing on a start attempt.
3. Check the Drive Belt
The drive belt is a long rubber band that loops around the drum and the motor pulley. Over years of use, it stretches, cracks, or snaps outright. To inspect it:
- Remove the top and front panels (consult your model's service layout, as designs vary by brand).
- Locate the belt running around the drum.
- Look for fraying, glazing, or a belt that has come off its track entirely.
A snapped belt is the single most common cause of a motor that runs while the drum stays still. Replacement belts are inexpensive and widely available for most brands sold in Kenya, but they must match your exact model's length and rib pattern.
4. Inspect the Idler Pulley and Tensioner
The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt. If it seizes up — usually from dried grease or a worn bearing — the belt can't grip the drum properly even if it's intact. Spin the pulley by hand; it should turn freely with no grinding or resistance. A seized pulley needs replacing rather than lubricating, since dryer components run near heat and standard oils and grease don't hold up.
5. Check the Drum Bearings and Rollers
Front-loading tumble dryers typically rest the drum on rear bearings or support rollers. Worn rollers develop flat spots, and bearings dry out and seize, both of which stop the drum from rotating freely even under motor power. Signs include a rough grinding sound before the fault and visible wear where the drum shaft or rim contacts its support.
6. Rule Out an Obstruction
Occasionally a stray item — a stiff garment, a bra underwire, or a small toy — wedges itself between the drum and the cabinet. Before replacing any parts, rotate the drum by hand with the machine unpolluted and unplugged to feel for physical resistance or a grinding point.
7. Test the Motor and Capacitor
If the belt, pulley, and bearings all check out but the drum still won't turn, the motor itself may be failing, or its starting capacitor (on capacitor-start motors) may have lost capacitance. This is best confirmed with a multimeter and is where most DIY troubleshooting reaches its limit.
When to Call a Technician
Belt and pulley swaps are manageable for a confident DIYer with the right tools. Bearing replacement, motor diagnosis, and capacitor testing involve more disassembly and carry a higher risk of damaging other components if done incorrectly.
