Installing a washing machine correctly helps prevent water leaks, excessive vibration, drainage problems, and damage to the appliance. The process involves preparing the installation area, removing transit protection, connecting the water and drain hoses, levelling the machine, and testing a complete wash cycle.

Prepare the following items before starting:

New water inlet hoses, if the supplied hoses are damaged or unsuitable.

Switch off the water supply before disconnecting an old washing machine. If you are replacing an existing appliance, unplug it from the wall socket and keep the power cable away from standing water.
1. Prepare the Installation Area
Choose a firm, level floor near the water supply, drain connection, and electrical socket. Avoid placing the appliance on a soft or unstable surface because movement during the spin cycle can damage the machine and surrounding fittings.
Measure the available space and compare it with the washing machine’s dimensions. Leave enough room behind and beside the appliance for hose connections, ventilation, and future servicing. Remove dirt, packaging materials, and objects that could obstruct the adjustable feet.
If the floor is uneven, correct the problem before installation where possible. Do not rely on loose pieces of wood or unstable supports to level the appliance.
2. Unpack the Washing Machine
Remove the outer packaging carefully using a utility knife. Avoid cutting near the power cord, hoses, control panel, or cabinet. Open the door or lid and remove accessories, manuals, detergent containers, and installation components from inside the drum.
Inspect the appliance for dents, cracks, loose parts, or shipping damage. Report serious damage to the supplier before connecting or operating the machine.
3. Remove the Transit Bolts
Front-loading washing machines normally have transit bolts fitted at the rear. These bolts hold the drum in place during transportation, but they must be removed before operation. Failure to remove them can cause severe vibration and mechanical damage.
Use the correct spanner or socket to remove each bolt. Keep the bolts in a safe place because they may be required if the appliance is moved in the future. Fit the supplied plastic caps into the bolt holes where applicable.
Do not operate the washing machine while the transit bolts are still installed.
4. Connect the Water Inlet Hoses
Check the rear of the appliance for the water inlet connections. Some washing machines use separate hot and cold inlets, while many modern models use only a cold-water connection. Follow the markings on the appliance and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Attach the rubber washers supplied with the hoses and connect each hose to the correct tap and machine inlet. Tighten the connections by hand, then give them a small additional turn with pliers if necessary. Avoid overtightening because this can damage the plastic threads or rubber seals.
Turn on the water taps slowly and inspect both ends of every hose. If you notice dripping, switch off the water supply and tighten the connection slightly.
5. Install the Drain Hose
Connect the drain hose to the designated drainpipe, standpipe, or sink outlet. Secure it with the supplied clip or retaining strap so it cannot fall out when the machine discharges water.
Ensure the hose is not kinked, crushed, or inserted too deeply into the drainpipe. A restricted or incorrectly positioned hose may cause slow drainage, siphoning, or water overflow. The exact drain height varies by model, so follow the appliance manual.
6. Position and Level the Machine
Carefully push the washing machine towards its final position without crushing the hoses or power cable. Place a spirit level on top of the appliance and check it from side to side and front to back.
Adjust the machine’s feet until the appliance sits firmly on the floor. All four feet must make solid contact, and the machine should not rock when pushed from the corners. Tighten the locking nuts on the feet after levelling. Correct levelling reduces noise, vibration, and movement during spinning.
7. Connect the Power Supply
Plug the washing machine directly into a suitable, properly earthed wall socket. Avoid using an overloaded extension lead or adapting plug, particularly in a damp laundry area.
Ensure the power cable is not trapped behind the machine, touching hot surfaces, or lying in water. If the socket, plug, or cable appears damaged, arrange for inspection by a qualified electrical professional before using the appliance.
8. Run a Test Cycle
Before washing clothes, turn on the water supply and check all hose connections again. Select a short wash or rinse programme and observe the machine throughout the cycle.

If the machine shakes heavily, stop the cycle and recheck the transit bolts, floor condition, and adjustable feet.
