Smeg Washing Machine Error Codes

Smeg washing machines display faults as either an E-code or an F-code family, depending on the model generation, shown on the digital display or, on older units, through a specific pattern of flashing status lights.

OPEN – Door open. Not a fault as such — it simply means the door lock hasn't activated because the door is genuinely open. Close it fully to proceed.

E1 – Aqua-stop leak detection. The built-in leak-detection system has sensed water where it shouldn't be and shut off the water supply as a safety measure. Check under the machine for standing water and inspect hose connections before resetting.

E2 – Anti-spill / water level fault. Related to the same protective system as E1, typically triggered by a water level reading that's outside the expected range during fill or drain.

E4 – NTC temperature sensor fault. A short circuit or open circuit in the temperature sensor, which is usually paired with the heating element. Either component (or both) may need testing and replacement.

E5 – Water filling fault. The solenoid valve is taking too long to fill the machine. Check that the tap is open, the intake pressure is above 1 bar, and the inlet filter isn't blocked; a faulty solenoid valve or pressure switch is the likely cause if supply checks out.

E6 – Draining fault. The washer isn't emptying properly. Power-cycle the machine to reset, then check the drain pump, the pressure switch, and the wiring between them.

E10 – Motor overcurrent. The drive motor is drawing more current than expected, which can point to a mechanical obstruction in the drum or a failing motor winding.

E11 – Motor triac short circuit. An electronic fault on the motor control circuit rather than a mechanical one; this generally requires board-level diagnosis by a technician.

E12 – Tachometer fault. The control board isn't getting proper speed feedback from the motor, similar to the tachometer faults seen on other European brands sharing motor technology.

E13 – Door lock (PTC) fault. The door won't lock in place, or its wiring has an issue. Check that the door closes correctly and inspect the wiring to the lock; a lock that has cycled open-and-closed repeatedly at the end of a cycle (rather than staying locked) often points to a failing door lock assembly needing replacement.

AF:01 – Heating error. A general heating system fault distinct from E4; check the heater and its connections.

Preventing Smeg Error Codes

Smeg's Aqua-stop leak-detection system, which triggers E1 and E2, is sensitive by design, so a few precautions go a long way. Check hose connections at the back of the machine for the smallest signs of seepage every few months, since even a minor weep is enough to trip the system. Keep the machine's feet properly adjusted and the unit level, since vibration from an unlevel machine can loosen hose clamps over time and indirectly cause the leak faults. Clean the inlet filter screens periodically to prevent the slow-fill symptoms behind E5, and avoid overdosing detergent, since Smeg's suds sensitivity is similar to other premium European brands and excess foam can interfere with accurate water-level readings. For the door lock system behind E13, make sure nothing is caught in the seal at the end of each cycle, since repeated lock/unlock cycling from a trapped item accelerates wear on the PTC door lock component.

When to Call a Professional

Door and water-filling faults (E5, E13, OPEN) are approachable for most owners. Motor and electronic faults (E10, E11, E12) require testing on the control board and are better suited to a qualified Smeg repair technician.
