Westinghouse washing machines run a two-digit E-code diagnostic system on digital-display models, with the first digit grouping the fault type (0 for door/lid faults, 1 for water fill, 2 for drainage, 3 for water level/overflow, 4/5 for motor and heating faults) and the second digit narrowing down the specific sensor or component involved. Older Westinghouse machines without a screen use flashing status lights in place of the code.

E01 – Door lock fault. The machine can't confirm the door is locked, so it won't start. Check that the door is pushed fully closed and that nothing — a sleeve, a strap, a sock — is caught in the seal. If the door closes cleanly and the fault persists, the door lock assembly or its wiring has likely failed and needs replacing.

E02 – Lid or door detected open during a cycle. This usually means the lid switch itself is faulty rather than the door genuinely being open, since the machine would otherwise simply refuse to start rather than fault mid-cycle. Inspect the switch and its wiring harness for looseness or corrosion.

E11 – Slow or incomplete water fill. Water isn't reaching the target level within the allowed time. Start with the basics: fully open both taps, straighten any kinked inlet hoses, and clean the small mesh filters where the hoses screw onto the machine. Low household water pressure is the most common cause.

E12 – Water fill timeout. A step further than E11 — the machine has given up trying to fill. Test the inlet valve solenoids with a multimeter if screens and pressure both check out; a solenoid that reads open circuit or wildly out of range needs replacing.

E13 – Water leak detected. The control board senses water in the base of the cabinet where it shouldn't be. Check the door seal for splits, the drain hose connections at the pump and standpipe, and the various internal hose clamps for looseness.

E20 / E21 – Drainage fault. The machine can't pump water out in the expected time. Clean the drain pump filter (typically behind a small flap at the base of the front panel), check the drain hose for kinks or blockages, and confirm nothing is jammed in the pump impeller.

E22 – Water fill combined with a level-sensing fault. Often points to a pressure switch that's stuck or has a perished sensing hose rather than a genuine supply problem. Reseat or replace the hose running from the tub to the pressure switch.

E23 / E24 – Drain pump communication or timing fault. The control board isn't getting a proper signal back from the drain pump. This can be a wiring fault at the pump connector or a pump motor that's drawing abnormal current and needs replacing.

E30 to E35 – Motor and drive faults. This range covers issues like the motor failing to reach target speed, tachometer signal loss, and drive belt slippage on older belt-driven models. A machine that hums but doesn't spin, or that trips these codes repeatedly, usually needs a technician to test the motor and its control board.

E40 / E50 – Heating and control board faults. These point to the water heater circuit or a more general electronic control fault. Because they involve mains-voltage components, testing is best left to a qualified appliance technician.

When to Call a Professional

Door, fill, and drain codes (E01–E24) are the ones most owners can resolve themselves with basic checks and cleaning.
