Tappan Washing Machine Error Codes
Tappan was folded into the Frigidaire Company decades ago and later became part of the White Consolidated Industries and Electrolux family, and its washing machines were built on the same manufacturing platforms as Frigidaire for most of their production run. As a result, Tappan washers — particularly later models — display the same E-series diagnostic codes used across the wider Frigidaire family rather than a code system unique to the brand.
E10 – No water detected. The washer isn't receiving water at all. Confirm both hot and cold supply valves behind the machine are fully open, check the inlet hoses for kinks, and clean the small mesh screens where the hoses connect to the back of the washer.
E11 – Fill time too long. Water is trickling in too slowly to reach the target level in the allotted time. This is most often low household water pressure or a partially clogged inlet screen, though a weak inlet valve solenoid is also a common cause on older units.
E13 – Water leak or pressure sensor fault. The control senses either a leak in the tub or a fault in the air hose that feeds the water-level pressure sensor. Check the hose for pinching, disconnection, or small tears, and look underneath the drum for standing water.
E20 / E21 – Drain fault. The washer can't pump water out fast enough. Clean the drain pump filter, check the drain hose for kinks, and confirm the hose isn't pushed more than about 8 inches into the household standpipe, which can cause siphoning problems that mimic a drain fault.
E23 – Drain pump communication fault. The control board isn't receiving a signal from the drain pump. This generally means a wiring fault at the pump connector, though a failed pump motor is also common on older machines.
E41 / E42 – Door lock faults. E41 means the door won't lock, E42 means it won't unlock. Both usually trace back to the door lock/latch assembly itself rather than a problem with the door.
F2 (top-load models) – Excess suds. Too much detergent, or a detergent not formulated for the machine, is producing more foam than the suds sensor allows. Switch to a high-efficiency detergent and use less of it.
Preventing Tappan Error Codes
Since parts and documentation are increasingly scarce for this brand, prevention goes a long way. Clean the drain pump filter every two to three months, since lint and small objects are the single biggest driver of E20/E21/E23 codes on machines of this era. Descale the machine periodically with a washing-machine-safe descaler if you're in a hard-water area, since mineral buildup on the heating element and inside the inlet valve accelerates the failures behind E11 and E13. Avoid overloading the drum, since a consistently overstuffed machine puts extra strain on both the door lock mechanism (E41/E42) and the drive motor. Keeping the inlet hoses free of sharp bends and checking them for cracking or bulging once or twice a year also helps avoid the fill and leak faults that are otherwise the most common reason older Tappan washers end up displaying a code at all. Given the age of most surviving Tappan units, proactively replacing rubber hoses every five to seven years, even before they show obvious wear, is a reasonable investment against a mid-cycle leak.
When to Call a Professional
Because Tappan shares its diagnostic architecture and many replacement parts with Frigidaire, most Tappan-specific parts suppliers will cross-reference against Frigidaire part numbers. Fill, drain, and door codes are usually DIY-friendly; motor and control board faults are best left to a technician given how scarce dedicated Tappan documentation has become.
