Neff Washing Machine Error Codes
Neff washing machines are manufactured by BSH Hausgeräte alongside Bosch, Siemens, and Constructa, and use the same E/F two-digit fault code numbering. If you can't find a specific code documented for Neff, checking the equivalent Bosch or Siemens code will almost always give you the correct meaning, since the underlying control boards and sensors are shared across the group.
E01 – Door lock fault. The door hasn't latched securely. Check the door seal for trapped fabric, then examine the door lock switch itself; persistent E01 faults with a properly closing door usually mean the lock assembly needs replacing.
E16 / E18 – Drain time exceeded. Water isn't clearing from the tub in time. Clean the pump filter (typically accessed through a small flap at the front base), check the drain hose route for kinks, and check the pump impeller for jammed debris.
E19 – Heating fault. The wash water isn't heating correctly. Check the heating element and its temperature sensor for continuity; a failed element is a common cause on machines several years old, particularly in hard-water areas where scale buildup accelerates element failure.
E20 – Water inlet fault. The machine isn't filling as expected. Confirm the supply tap is open, check the inlet hose for kinks, and clean the mesh filter at the hose connection.
E23 – Drain pump circuit fault. The pump isn't responding correctly to the control board's signal. Listen for the pump during a spin-only test cycle; silence usually means a failed pump motor.
E25 – Pressure sensor fault. The water-level sensing circuit is out of range, most often from a kinked or disconnected sensing hose rather than a genuinely failed sensor.
E31 – Overflow protection triggered. The washer detected excess water and stopped the fill. A stuck-open inlet valve is the most frequent cause; shut off the water supply until it's inspected.
E32 – Unbalanced load. The drum couldn't reach a safe spin balance. Redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum, especially with single bulky items, and restart the cycle.
E42 – Door lock/unlock timing fault. Related to E01 but specifically flags a timing mismatch between the lock signal and the control board's expectation. A reset often clears a one-off occurrence; a repeat fault points to the lock mechanism.
Preventing Neff Error Codes
Since Neff shares its underlying components with the rest of the BSH group, the same preventive habits apply. Clean the drain filter regularly, particularly if you routinely wash items with pockets, since coins and small objects are the single most common physical cause of E16/E18. Keep an eye on detergent dosing — Neff's high-spin-speed drums are sensitive to excess suds, which can indirectly trigger fill and drain faults by confusing the pressure sensor. Periodically run an empty maintenance wash at a high temperature to limit scale and detergent buildup around the heating element, which extends the life of the component behind E19. And check that the machine is properly leveled on its feet at installation, since a machine that rocks during spin is more likely to register false E32 imbalance faults even with a properly distributed load.
When to Call a Professional
As with its sister brands, fill and drain faults are the easiest for an owner to resolve. Heating and motor-related codes generally require testing components with a multimeter and, in many cases, replacing a part on the main control board — at that point, it's more cost-effective to bring in a technician familiar with BSH-platform machines.
