Inspecting a Broken Laundry machine Counterweight

Signs of a Broken Counterweight, Costs of Repair in Nairobi

Counterweights are the heavy concrete or cast-iron blocks bolted inside a washing machine's cabinet, usually at the top and front of the tub. They exist for one reason: to hold the tub steady against the violent torque of a high-speed spin. Concrete counterweights, common in front-loaders sold in Kenya, are prone to crumbling, cracking, and breaking loose from their mounting bolts. When a counterweight fails, the whole machine becomes a shaking, banging hazard.

Signs of a Broken Counterweight

1. Heavy metallic or concrete knocking during spin. A loose counterweight slams against the cabinet or tub with every drum rotation. The sound is deeper and heavier than a coin rattle — more like someone knocking on the machine with a fist.

2. Extreme vibration and machine movement. Without counterweight mass, the tub's spin forces shake the entire cabinet. Machines that rock violently or walk across the floor at spin speed often have a cracked or detached weight.

3. Crumbling debris under or inside the machine. Broken concrete weights shed grit and gravel. If you find grey dust and concrete fragments inside the cabinet or beneath the machine, a counterweight has disintegrated.

4. Visible cracks when the back panel is removed. Removing the machine's rear cover exposes the weights. Cracks across the block, or missing chunks, mean replacement is due.

5. Loose or missing mounting bolts. Counterweights are held by large bolts that loosen over years of vibration. A visibly loose bolt, elongated bolt hole, or rattling weight is a precursor to complete failure.

6. New imbalance errors on old machines. Older machines that suddenly start throwing imbalance errors or aborting spins — despite normal, balanced loads — often do so because a counterweight has partly broken away.

Costs of Repair in Nairobi

Counterweight part: Replacement concrete or cast-iron counterweights cost KSh 2,500 – KSh 7,000 each depending on brand, with genuine Bosch, LG, and Samsung weights at the top of the range.

Labour: Accessing the counterweight usually requires removing the top or rear panel and sometimes the tub mounting. Expect KSh 1,500 – KSh 3,500 in labour; the job typically takes one to three hours.

Typical totals: Budget KSh 4,500 – KSh 10,000 all-in for a single counterweight replacement. If mounting brackets or the tub frame is also damaged, add KSh 1,500 – KSh 4,000.

Budget note: On entry-level machines, repeated counterweight failure combined with tub damage can approach the cost of a new machine, so weigh the quote carefully.

Tips to Keep Costs Down

  • Tighten bolts early. A loose counterweight caught in time costs almost nothing to secure.
  • Check the floor. Machines on uneven floors shake themselves apart — levelling feet extend weight life.
  • Source weights from Kirinyaga Road spares dealers to beat technician markups.

Counterweight repair is moderately priced in Nairobi and, if caught early, restores spin stability for years.
Concrete counterweights deserve special attention whenever a machine is transported. Nairobi's second-hand machine market is large, and machines that travelled rough-shod on pickups and boda bodas arrive with cracked weights and elongated bolt holes, so always test a second-hand machine on a spin cycle before paying. When a concrete weight crumbles, some technicians offer to recast it in concrete — a legitimate low-cost repair for older machines where the part is out of stock, provided the weight and mounting geometry match the original. Cast-iron weights on premium machines rarely crack but rust at their mountings; wire-brushing and resealing buys extra years. Finally, ask the technician to check the tub frame and damper mountings at the same time, since whatever destroyed the weight often damaged its neighbours.
